Julius J. Nam, Associate Professor of Religion

Julius J. Nam is Associate Professor of Religion at Loma Linda University School of Religion, and a Commissioned Minister of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He was one of the founders and leaders of “Adventists Against Prop 8“, which led a campaign against his church’s support of California Proposition 8 in 2008 and against the Proposition itself. He is a member of the Korean Americans United for Equality (KUE), a support and advocacy alliance for sexual and gender equality based in Los Angeles, and the API Equality Faith Committee in Los Angeles, an organization committed to working in the Asian and Pacific Islander community for equal marriage rights and overall acceptance of LGBT people.

Professor Nam received his PhD degree in Religion with an emphasis on Christian History from Andrews University. He has served as a church pastor in South Korea, Michigan and Los Angeles.

He has worked as the editor of Compass, a monthly magazine for Korean youth and young adults in North America, and the Executive Director of Empower Ministry Group, a progressive Christian ministry training organization for next generation Asian-American leaders. Prior to his move to Loma Linda in 2006, he taught religious studies at Pacific Union College in the Napa Valley for three years.

Professor Nam is co-editor of the upcoming book, World Religions for Healthcare Professionals (Routledge, 2009), and has translated several books on Christian history and theology into Korean. He has published numerous academic and popular articles for books, journals and magazines. He is a frequent speaker at Christian and inter-religious conferences, worship services, retreats, and workshops. He is active in the American Academy of Religion, Adventist Society for Religious Studies, Conference on Faith and History, and the Association of Seventh-day Adventist Historians.
